"Facilities Management Inflation" - Angelo Agrizzi and Ishmael Mncwaba

Traditionally food inflation picks up over November and December. This year BOSASA has seen unprecedented increases in the "basket basics", on the items that not only contribute to the highest per centum usage, but also add to 80% of the costs. In discussions with key suppliers Ishmael Mncwaba, Angelo Agrizzi and Gavin Watson have pulled out all stops to block negative impacts on Bosasa clientele which include Dept of Correctional Services, the Department of Home Affairs and the Department of Social service.

Angelo Agrizzi reiterates - "We first started picking up the adverse increases in February and March of 2008. The world price index averaged 200 points up from 159 in 2007. We then saw February 2011, at a peak of 238 points, a 49,6% jump from 2007." According to Ishmael Mncwaba, this is happening across all food spectrums. An example of this is that red meat and poultry prices would see a slight decline, and the trend has been to park the higher pricing

Maize pricing it seems has played the largest role. Considering that maize products are also used in poultry and red meat production it contributed to a major cost for the latter. It rose from R1320.00 per ton in 2010 to R2530.00 per ton from December 2011. This showed a 91,6% year on year increase.

Considering that maize forms the staple food for over 60% of our population, one shudders to think what the effect is on each family's basket of goods.

Ishmael Mncwaba and Angelo Agrizzi have kept their fingers on the pulse: "It's pointless to analyse food inflation on CPIX. How on earth do you tell a rural family that CPIX is just over the 10% mark, when they now paying almost double for the same bag of maize they bought at the same rural concession a year ago? Perhaps it's time to revisit the establishment of a commission with the view to stabilizing the maize prices in Southern Africa. This is a move Bosasa would welcome."

Following the last price fixing saga, it is clear that even a basic such as bread is not immune. Priced at R5.45 in May 2008, the same product now retails at R9.75 per loaf. Once more we see a cost increase in about 78%. This has had a direct effect on Full Facilities costs, as bread is more than a staple. It forms at least 20% of our day to day catering costs.http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gif

Red meat prices have risen astronomically from a R34.75 average in May 2008 to a mind boggling R58.90. In December 2011, we saw a whopping 69% increase, with poultry trailing behind at an average of 32%. The only reason for this is that the local market has been somewhat governed by imported poultry at very fair prices.

All in all, at this stage it is not possible to predict where food inflation will end mid-2012. We are however doing our best to try and keep it below the 30% mark for our clientele, in the hope that we don't have our plans derailed by unforeseen weather patterns" says Gavin Watson.

The glue of the Company - Finance

Perhaps no division deserves as much respect and appreciation as the financial hub of a company. It is here that due diligence is exercised, effective controls are introduced and maintained and the sustainability of a company is guaranteed.

Reporting to and directed by the board (which is chaired by Joe Gumede), Bosasa's financial division under the leadership of, Angelo Agrizzi, Andries van Tonder and Carlos Bonifacio all of whom report to the board, has no peer. This frees COO Angelo Agrizzi up to operationalise an advanced strategy through the Bosasa A team. The comprehensive Bosasa team comprises 49 members of staff from specialised fields, each contributing to the smooth running of the Group.

Bosele celebrates the division and its sub-units to make things happen: Payroll (salaries and wages), Accounts Receivable, Accounts Payable, Petty Cash, DCS Administration and General Ledger. Accounts uses Great Plains Dynamics, a Microsoft state of the art Sequel based accounting software, customised to provide essential outputs.

Carlos is proud of his team's achievements in turn and his report to Joe Gumede and the board is overwhelming. Here is a typical day in his own words. "We need to run the biggest catering contract in the Southern Hemisphere efficiently. The Bosasa leadership team recognised that a technology solution was the only way to meet stakeholder needs. We had to manage stock levels, cost analysis, correct reporting and control of nutritional value of meals, stock rotation, re-order levels, daily stock issues from stores as well as the accurate preparation of billing records for ourselves and our clients. To achieve this we developed a custom Web-based solution, KAS. It is designed to integrate with Microsoft Great Plains which controls and record the voluminous data emanating from the DCS kitchens that Bosasa operates throughout the Republic. Main board Director and Chairman of full facilities management for the group, Ishmael Mncwaba monitors its efficacy ensuring that benchmarks set by the board are met. Centralised controllers monitor the distribution processes under his watch. This allows employees access to reliable, accurate information in real-time, as well as an improved customer experience through the electronic accessibility of information and processes. KAS, which stands for Kitchen Administration System, is updated as necessary in house as are other enhancements to Great Plains.

The Finance unit cooperates with other units. "For the new DOJ Security contract spearheaded by Group Chairman Joe Gumede, the IT team developed a database that controls and assists in the preparation of the invoicing to DOJ. Payroll and Accounts Receivable, the most affected accounting divisions by the DOJ contract, have absorbed the additional work through intelligent planning and dedication without taking on any extra staff." All these other operational areas fall under the Bosasa Group COO Angelo Agrizzi who is accountable to the board.

With this superior software Carlos Bonifacio in consultation with the executive, is able to produce answers to any financial question. This enables rapid responses to any rising situation.

Some statistics make us pay attention: Accounts processes approximately 59 500 journals in an average month. The integration journal from VIP to Great Plains alone contains more than 4000 lines. This is classified as one entry in Great Plains. Payroll processes on average 5350 employees a month. Petty cash has 56 sites under its control.

The buck stops here
Having the right software and statistics at your fingertips may mean little. http://www.blogger.com/img/blank.gifKnowing how to interpret the data for the good of the company is the skill that sets our financial team apart. The ability to make rapid informed decisions has always been the silver thread of a financially solid organisation and market leader" shares Angelo Agrizzi. Our Finance Division is the glue of the Group, anchoring it further with a loyal dedicated team who will tell you that working with figures, data and statistics is their passion. Carlos informally describes his team as both the scorekeeper and referee of Bosasa. Enter their world and you know you are in the presence of both left and right brained thinkers. The rest of us tend to dominate with one hemisphere. You enter hallowed ground.

Full Facilities Management - Angelo Agrizzi

Sustaining the lead of Full Facilities Management in South Africa has been a 15 year journey for Angelo Agrizzi. COO of the Bosasa Group of Companies, Angelo Agrizzi chose a Steve Jobs style of innovation, to remain ahead of this growing sector - always lead the field with relevant products. Bosasa's dominant position in the industry has been the result of streamlining decision making while monitoring daily operations. This was enhanced by Angelo Agrizzi's application of TrustMaster working with the leadership team. It became an integrated software solution which had never been tested in the Full Facilities Management environment before. Designed and developed in partnership with Tatvasoft, India, TrustMaster monitors all functions and deliverables of a Full Facilities Management mandate. As an evolving and expanding industry, Angelo Agrizzi realised that excellence in the field of Full Facilities Management would not suffice for a competitive edge. Trend setting, the use of advanced technology, added value and knowledge management. Instant decision making by all stakeholders would achieve that edge. The TrustMaster application that Angelo Agrizzi sought was one of resilience -adaptable to back and front end changes according to client focused needs.

Full Facilities management is a complex environment. With multiple facets it requires expert input. The highly specialised executive team provides collective regular input for sustainability: Papa Leshabane Director of Media & Communications and Ishmael Mncwaba contribute integrated software application knowledge and Joe Gumede rounds off with his knowledge of risk management. Social scientists Thandi Makoko and Jackie Leyds as directors understand the personal and emotional needs of staff to maximise performance of client and Bosasa personnel. Collective contribution by the Bosasa Group board remains a unique feature of all Company activities. This reduces margins of error in planning and decision making.

Once the TrustMaster platform was consolidated, Angelo's next step was to link the potential of this cutting edge software to other applications. The enhancement of the public sector as stakeholder decision making, became a priority. Angelo drew models from the world's greatest thinkers which the board had brainstormed as relevant to the context, together.

Supported by the Research and Development team at the Bosasa head office - Mogale Business Park, worldviews of global leaders were analysed for application in the Full Facilities Management field. Nobel Prize winner Joseph Stiglitz and his ‘country competitiveness models' were studied. Harvard Professor Michael Porter had opened up competitive edge thinking and translated it into simple attributes of cost, volume and schedule. The competitive edge model had stood the test of time.

The Bosasa Group had succeeded in delivering substance, high volume applications at speed and on time, within cost specifications. Speed of delivery substantially reduced labour, technology and hard and soft service costs. Using these sustainability models as reference, Angelo Agrizzi, through the Bosasa board of directors changed the Full Facilities Management arena by achieving what is considered to be a world first. Both qualitative and quantitative elements were included in the decision making functionality of the TrustMaster integrated software. This took knowledge management to a new level and all stakeholders were able to participate actively. Angelo Agrizzi ensures that TrustMaster has specialised and customised application in the public sector. Correctional Services (DCS) is one client that has continued to enjoy the benefits of this high end integrated technology application and inputs of the Bosasa leadership team. Bosasa Operations, with its sophisticated approach to full facilities management radically cuts day to day running costs of DCS, improving divisional functionality while enhancing leadership deliverables.

Angelo Agrizzi and his team have provided solutions for public sector efficiency and effectiveness while elevating the South African Full Facilities Management model to global professional status - where it belongs.
